The Rising on our doorstep

Did you know we’ve a little bit of Irish history right on our doorstep? Our head offices at Herbert Place were at the heart of many key locations where the events of The Rising unfolded.

At Mount Street Bridge - just 300 yards from our offices - on Easter Monday, 24th April 1916, at 11:00a.m., Lieutenant Michael Malone inspired 17 Volunteers from ‘C’ Company, 3rd Battalion, to prevent British reinforcements from entering the city.

That eventful morning, the rebels took up several key positions from the bridge to the junction of Northumberland Road and Pembroke Road - including Carrisbrooke House, 25 Northumberland Road, the Parochial Hall, and the Schoolhouse.

The Volunteers faced a battalion of British Soldiers. Four Volunteers lost their lives, as well as a number of civilians. Official British casualties amounted to four officers and 216 other ranks killed or wounded during the engagement at Mount Street.

There are lots of events around the country to remember the 1916 rising, checkout www.ireland.ie/ EasterRising for details of events in your area.
